Linspire (formerly known as Lindows) is a Linux  operating system that was launched in the fall of 2002. It was created by Michael Robertson who was the inventor of the mp3 file format. Michael, like many frustrated computer users, felt there should be a viable and easy to use alternative operating system to Microsoft Windows platforms. Hence, Lindows was born. Sure it was a corny name. The "Lin" part refers to Linux. The system is based on the Debian Linux platform. To most new computer users, that means nothing. But to some of you who have been around the circuit, you know very well it refers to Linux, another operating system based on Unix which has been around a very long time. The name was changed to Linspire after a lengthy legal battle with Microsoft to be able to use the name Lindows. Apparently, it sounded a bit too much like Windows.

There has always been a kind of rift between Linux users and Windows users just like between MAC/Apple users-each side toting the laurels of their preferred system. Let's face reality here. The world has been seized by Microsoft, it is everywhere in offices and schools alike. All the hardware and peripheral manufacturers for computer products make their stuff work for Windows based systems. ( We won't even get into APPLE computers here) Yes, there is a monopoly and that bothers some people quite a lot. So, for the hundreds of arguments on both sides, good and bad, it doesn't make much difference as people will try what they think is right and either stick with it or not. How many people do we know stuck back in the DOS world? Well, their computing needs are met and that is all that is important to them.

So where does Side Porch Windows come in? Well, we want to be able to offer our clients that alternative, no matter what the reason, and to be able to support an excellent product that is going to get better and better as the years go by. Sure, it may never replace Microsoft Windows in the mainstream, but the people who use it and enjoy it are happy to have had that choice.

We build systems from scratch, and we refurbish systems. You are required to buy your own licensed copy of what ever it is you use and we will install it for you. But, you may want to try something else like thousands of other people are doing. And with great success.

So we decided to provide our clients with this option and to support the product along with Linspire of course.

Why not follow the links to the Linspire site and see for yourself. We will be happy to demonstrate the product and answer any of your questions. The system is currently selling for $ 49.95 US Digital Edition and that includes a free version membership to "Click and Run" which allows you to download and use forever thousands of applications. Your downloads are saved for you in a "Library" on Linspire servers and you can install your system on as many of your own computers as you want and install the programs on any of them too. That is pretty flexible and generous licensing don't you agree?

So, what exactly is Linspire?
